In 1955, Ranthambore was declared a wildlife sanctuary. It was in the year 1973 that Ranthambore was declared a part of the Project Tiger campaign. The best time to visit the Ranthambore national park is during the months of November - April. This is the time when the weather is at its best and tigers can be easily spotted basking in the warm sunshine during the day. The whole area of the park is around 400 square kilometers. The tigers can actually be called as "friendly" as they have been filmed numerous times by wildlife documentary makers without any hassles.

The park has a varied topography, which makes it the ideal home for various other animals like leopards, panthers, deer, jackals, sloth bear and of course reptiles.
